Words Heard Not Spoken

Buffy walked down the corridor of Sunnydale High, her own thoughts now jumbled up with the thoughts of all those around her. She walked past Principal Snyder and couldn’t help giggling as she heard him singing "Walk Like An Egyptian" in his head.

"Giles?"

Buffy pushed open the library doors and walked inside, looking around for Giles. He walked out from the stacks to the top of the stairs and looked down at her for a moment before smiling in greeting.

"Good morning Buffy."

After he spoke Buffy heard what Giles was actually thinking.

"Look at her shoes. If a fashion magazine told her to she’d wear cats strapped to her feet."

"I would not!"

"I beg your pardon?"

Buffy sighed and perched herself on one of the desks.

"Never mind."

Giles shook his head in confusion and lifted a hand to his temple, feeling a sudden headache coming on. He walked down the stairs and sat on one of the chairs next to the table, removing his glasses and looking up at her.

"What’s going on?"

"Nothing. What makes you think something is going on?"

Buffy put on her best innocent face but Giles still just gave her an I-know-when-something-is-up-with-you glare. But as he stared at her his face softened and Buffy could have sworn she a hint of desire flicker in his eyes. Giles’ thoughts quickly confirmed her suspicions.

"My God she just gets more beautiful. How I wish I could just take her in my arms and kiss her like I want to. Show her.. no stop it man, get a grip on yourself. You must stop thinking those things about her. You must."

A slow smile crept onto Buffy’s face as she registered what she’d just heard. She never believed that Giles could possibly feel that way about her. Until that moment she hadn’t even realised that she desperately wanted him to.

"Buffy?"

Buffy shook herself from her thoughts and realised she’d been staring at him.

"Sorry what?"

"What’s the matter?"

Giles thoughts again came through to Buffy loud and clear.

"Why was she looking at me like that? I wasn’t staring at her was I? Oh God what if she knows? She’d be disgusted by the very thought."

Buffy felt her heart literally break at hearing that. How could Giles think that he could ever disgust her? He may not have been her Watcher anymore, but he was still an important part of her life, she would always need him. And it was now occurring to her that she needed Giles even more than she realised. They were connected in mind and soul already, but it was in body that Buffy was suddenly really thinking about being connected with him.

"Buffy! Will you please stop daydreaming and talk to me?"

Buffy looked up at Giles’ face. With his glasses off he looked so much more youthful, but his eyes shone with experience and a wisdom even beyond his years. At that moment, staring into his eyes, there was no question about what it was she wanted.

When she first walked into the library Buffy had been ready to tell him about her new found ability, but now she decided it would be better to wait and use it to her advantage.

"Giles?"

"Yes?"

Buffy moved off the desk, kneeling on the floor besides the chair and placing a hand on Giles’ leg, causing him to jump.

"Buffy, what on earth are you doing?"

Buffy didn’t reply, but she didn’t remove her hand either. She slid it up and down Giles’ thigh, rubbing against the smooth fabric of his dress pants. Giles bit down on his lip, afraid he’d soon be betraying just how much he was enjoying the feeling of her touching him.

"Oh God that feels good. But I have to stop her or I might.."

Giles didn’t even finish his thought, but Buffy smiled to herself, wanting to discover just what he would do if she in fact didn’t stop. Her hand slid further up his thigh, lightly brushing over his groin and the growing bulge that was becoming clearly evident through his trousers.

This time Giles couldn’t hold back the moan that escaped his lips. Fighting for control he placed his hand on top of Buffy’s, stopping her movements. His thoughts and words were in conflict, but he couldn’t possibly know that Buffy realised it.

"Why did I stop her? That felt so right."

"What are you doing?"

Buffy smiled up at him, wanting to respond to his first thought instead of his words.

"I’m touching you."

"That I noticed."

"Why?"

Buffy smiled again, squeezing his thigh and causing him to whimper slightly. She’d never heard Giles whimper before, she wondered what other sounds she could elicit from him.

"Because I wanted to."

Giles looked generally shocked, but unbeknownst to him his thoughts again betrayed his true feelings.

"What else would you like to do?"

"Why?"

Buffy smiled again at the difference between Giles words and his thoughts, wishing that she could make him speak out loud what he was really feeling.

"You’re always honest with me aren’t you Giles?"

"I’d like to think so."

"Do you love me?"

"With all my heart."

"Um, I .."

"I love you too. With all my heart."

Giles didn’t register her declaration of love, as he was too busy trying to figure out how she’d somehow known exactly what he was thinking. He sat there looking at her with a puzzled look on his face, until finally it came to him.

"She got her aspect of the demon. You can read my mind can’t you Buffy?"

Buffy nodded, answering his thought. Giles stood up from his chair and moved away, leaving Buffy kneeling on the floor looking up at him.

"What’s wrong Giles?"

"That wasn’t at all fair Buffy."

Buffy stood up.

"I’m sorry. I was going to tell you, but then, I heard what you were thinking, and realised how much I wanted to hear you say it."

"I think I must be going mad."

"Wanted me to say what?"

"That you love me as much as I love you."

"Did she just say she loved me? No, she couldn’t have."

Buffy walked slowly towards Giles and stopped in front of him. She took his hand in her own and placed it flat upon her chest so he could feel the fast beating of her heart. She in turn placed her hand on his chest, feeling his heart beating in time with hers.

"All that matters is what’s in here Giles. And in here I know that you and I belong together."

"This must be a dream."

"Giles stop that! This is real okay?"

"How can you love me Buffy? I’m old enough to be .."

Buffy silenced Giles with a single finger on his lips. Without hesitation she stood on her tiptoes and replaced her finger with her mouth. Giles paused for only a second before responding to the kiss, moving his hands down to her waist and pulling her against him as his tongue slid across her lower lip and delved into her mouth. By the time they pulled away they were both breathless.

"Wow."

"Wow."

Buffy giggled as Giles thought the exact same word she spoke. Giles sighed.

"You know that’s becoming rather disturbing."

"Well just only think the things you want me to hear."

A wicked Ripper-ish grin appeared on Giles’ face as he thought of exactly what he wanted to do to Buffy at that moment. Buffy’s face turned bright red and she felt the desire she’d been feeling in the pit of her stomach spread quickly to other areas.

"You’re an evil man Rupert Giles."

Giles just grinned again and was about to say something else when the library doors swung open and Cordelia came striding in. Buffy and Giles quickly put some space between them.

"Have you guys seen Wesley?"

Buffy smiled.

"What do you want him for?"

"I can think of one particular thing I’d like him for. If his shy British ass ever gets up the courage to make a move."

"Oh, I just have to talk to him about something."

Buffy giggled.

"What!?"

"Nothing. Um, Giles, where’s Wesley?"

Before Giles could answer the doors swung open yet again and Wesley came in, carrying a stack of books under one arm. When he saw Cordelia he almost dropped the whole lot.

"Miss Chase .."

"God, she’s stunning."

Buffy looked back and forth between Wesley and Cordelia as they stared at each other. She was finding the thoughts they were having about each other interesting but also rather disturbing. She snuck a glance at Giles who was just staring at her with a slight grin on his face.

"The sooner those two get out of here, the sooner I can take you up to those stacks and do exactly what I thought about earlier."

Buffy felt another shiver of desire run down through her body and she turned her attention back to Wesley and Cordelia.

"Wesley, Cordelia, I think it’s about time the two of you went and got a coffee together or something."

Wesley looked offended.

"Excuse me? I’m the Watcher here, and I don’t need you telling me what to do."

Cordelia quickly chipped in.

"But it’s not a bad idea. Come on Wesley, I’ll buy."

Wesley looked flustered but he quickly managed to blurt out a stuttered acceptance and he and Cordelia left the library together. Buffy watched them go and briefly wondered whether either of them would actually act on some of the thoughts they were having. She honestly hadn’t thought Wesley would have known about some of those things he’d been thinking.

She turned around and saw that Giles had made his way to the top of the stairs and was waiting for her to join him. Buffy smiled and walked up the stairs and Giles took her in his arms.

"Something you’d like to tell me Mr. Giles?"

No words were spoken, but what she heard in Giles’ thoughts told Buffy all that she needed to know. She smiled.

"I love you too."

End.
