"I love you Rupert."

The words drifted across the table to Giles and slowly sunk into his brain.

"I'm sorry." he shook his head and stared down at his plate absentmindedly twirling his spaghetti so he wouldn't have to see the hurt that would be in her face.

"Don't you want me anymore, Rupert?"

"Of course I do. I still want you, I need you but..."

"You don't love me, Do you love someone else?"

Then there was silence. Finally he looked up to see his girlfriend put down her fork, stand up and leave the restaurant.

I want you
I need you
But there ain’t no way I'm ever gonna love you
Now don't be sad cause two out of three ain’t bad.

Well, there's only one girl that I will ever love
And that was so many years ago
I know I'll never get her out of my heart
she never loved me back oh I know
Well I remember how she left me on a stormy night...
I pleaded and I begged her not to walk out that door
But she packed her bags and turned right away
She kept on telling me

I want you
I need you
But there ain’t no way I'm ever gonna love you
But don't be sad cause two out of three ain’t bad

Buffy stood in front of him, astonished, her mouth hanging open like a goldfish.

"I love you. I always have. I'm in love with you Buffy."

"I, I don't know what to say. I need your support Giles, I can't do it without you and I want you to stay but...I don't, couldn't love you like that." As she turned round again Giles searched her face for any sign that she didn't mean what she said, any sign that she did return his feelings he saw nothing. Not even any sorrow at the hurt he must feel just confusion and a slight hint of distaste. Buffy turned away from him and walked to the door, running after her Giles grabbed her arm before she left.

"Please don't go, not like this. It's raining. There are vampires you're too upset to deal with them. Please don't go."

"I'm sorry Giles. What I can't deal with is this. Tomorrow we'll be fine again but tonight...I just can't hack this ok?" And she walked out into the stormy night to do the duty that she had performed almost every night since she came to Sunnydale.

Giles sat in his apartment Whisky glass in his hand and an almost empty bottle on the table in front of him. The doorbell rang, he forced himself up and stumbled to the door, praying it was Buffy come to change her mind. It was Willow. She ran into his arms sobbing, an action that nearly knocked him off balance. Looking up Willow saw the whisky glass in his hand,

"You already know then?" She sobbed.

"No. I don't. What is it? Buffy?" He asked with a sense of foreboding.

Willow nodded, "Vampires. They overpowered her." Unwrapping Willow's arms from around him, Giles put down his glass and walked out of the apartment, ignoring Willows questions and pleas. That was the last time any of the others saw him.
