Authors Note: Ok so I'm trying to be angsty! But then I never have been terribly good at it. But I hope you enjoy it anyway! The song is "You'll Be in My Heart" by Phil Collins. Which just proves I'm way to addicted to B/G fic. As even while watching Tarzan I can sit there going ‘that song would be great in a B/G fic..’ Also a BIG thanks to Lily, for BETA’ing & making it readable.

The world seemed to slow down, the squeal of tires, almost deafening as the car jumped the curb. Buffy tried to push Giles out of the path of the speeding car; take the impact herself. But there just wasn't time. The sickening sound of crushing metal and the crack of breaking bones filled the air, as the car came to a halt, leaving a trail of destruction on the sidewalk. Yet the only thing that had Buffy's attention was Giles broken body, lying on the pavement. She ran to his side, kneeling beside his prone body. The sound of his breathing labored. Smoothing back a blood smeared lock of hair, she silently willed him to open his eyes, to give her some sign he was still with her. She could almost feel the life force rushing out of his body along with the blood that now stained the pavement with a crimson lake.

"No don't you die. Don't you die on me. Don't you dare. Stay with me!! GILES!!! You promised, stay with me! Stay with me! I need you! NO!!! HELP ME, SOMEBODY HELP ME!!" Buffy screamed, feeling past hysterical, as Giles warm blood pulsed through her small fingers. "You can't leave me, I LOVE YOU! Stay with me!" sobbing now, she shook his dying body. "I had plans for us! So many plans! You can't die! I won't let you! If you die you will kill me! HELP ME! ANYBODY!"

Just then she heard the far off wail of an ambulance. She looked up, taking in the people gathered around her. "Do something, please" she pleaded. "Don't let him leave me. It wasn't meant to happen like this! We were going to be happy! God damn you Giles. You can not leave me! Not like this!"

Giles opened his eyes, just as the ambulance rounded the corner. Looking at Buffy not really seeing her through them but in his mind. "I .love you." He gasped, then the last of his life seemed to slip from him, and he stopped breathing.

"NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO" Buffy's tormented wail tore the air, and the hearts of the people around her. Then she slipped quietly into oblivion, the reality of a life without Giles, her Watcher, her one true love, too much for her to handle.

Buffy looked around, where on Earth, or should that be the Hellmouth was she? In all directions all she could see was thick white fog, as it swirled around her, clinging to her, yet she wasn't frightened, it was comforting, like being wrapped in a loving embrace. Then she remembered Giles, dying in her arms. As the tears started to roll down her face, she felt a change in the air, a familiar & reassuring presence. "Hello?" she shouted into the thickness. Was she dead? Was this what the other side was, a big cloudy nothingness. As her voice echoed back to her, she could hear another sound. The soft lilting sound of music.

Come stop your crying

It will be all right

Just take my hand

Hold it tight

Someone tapped her on the shoulder. She turned slowly and came face to face with a set of soulful green eyes. "Giles?" she chocked out between her sobs.

"Hush Buffy, don't cry." He gently wiped the tears from her face, placing a soft kiss on her forehead he then gathered her in his arms. Her head resting on his chest, listening to the soft thump of his heart muffled only by his crisp black suit. As he wrapped his arms around her, she felt her sadness recede, as long as she was in his arms, she would always be content. He moved them to the music, dancing them slowly around in the open space.

The fog swirling around them like a living, breathing force.

I will protect you

from all around you

I will be here

Don't you cry

"Are we dead?" she whispered. "Is this what this is?"

"That's up to you Buffy. It was you that brought us here, only you can return yourself to our reality."

"Will you be there?" she whimpered against his chest.

"I will always be there for you Buffy. Even in death they could not keep us apart. I would protect you even then."

"It's not the same. I couldn't survive without you."

"My sweet, sweet girl. You are the strongest, bravest person I know. No matter what happens you must always remember that. No matter what the odds, you can beat them."

"Not me, WE. We can beat them."

For one so small,

you seem so strong

My arms will hold you

keep you safe and warm

This bond between us

can't be broken

I will be here

Don't you cry

"You must make a choice. Do you want to remain here, or return to our family?"

"I don't want to leave you!"

"It's not my choice Buffy. If I can come with you I will."

She shuddered into his shoulder, how could she choose? The choice of maybe never seeing the man she loved again, or never seeing her family. Looking into his eyes, she knew the choice she had to make. The choice he would want her to make. "I love you." She whispered, then gently pulled his head down until his lips met hers.

"You made the right choice, they still need you."

"Then why does it hurt so much?"

'Cause you'll be in my heart

Yes, you'll be in my heart

From this day on

Now and forever more

Suddenly the swirling mist got thicker, until she couldn't see an inch in front of her. "Giles?" she held onto him all the more tighter.

"I love you, Buffy. You are the one true shining light in my life." He gently kissed her. Taking her hand, he took the ring from his own finger, and slid it onto hers. Lifting her hand to his mouth he kissed the ring. Then took a step back disappearing into the fog.

"Giles? GILES! Don't leave me!"

You'll be in my heart

No matter what they say

You'll be here

in my heart always

She could hear other voices now, seemingly from far away. She tried to concentrate. Since she couldn't see through the fog, she concentrated her other senses. She could smell the strong scent of ammonia, and a beeping noise droned into a never ending cacophony of sound blurring, the voices. Where was she now? She listened again trying to make out the voices.

"We've tried everything, Mrs. Summers. There is no physical reason why she should still be in the coma. Yet as I'm sure you've been told before, what she witnessed was very traumatic. This is her bodies way of protecting her from the tragedy."

"Thank-you Doctor. I know that you are doing everything. But it's frustrating to see her withering away in here. It's been a nearly a month, we keep hoping that one day we'll come here & she'll be sitting in bed. Moaning about how much she hates hospitals. You should have seen her before this. She was such . Is such a bright, beautiful girl. She was always on the move. Always getting into some kind of trouble. Oh god I miss her!" Joyce sobbed as she sunk into the chair at Buffy's bedside; the Doctor left silently leaving her to grieve in peace. "Buffy, honey! If you can hear me, come back to me, to all of us.

At the sound of her mother's distraught voice, Buffy tired to fight her way through the fog that was still clouding her mind. "Giles??" her voice croaky from disuse, she could barely form the words.

"Buffy! Doctor! Quickly she's waking up! Quickly." Joyce jumped up, at a loss whether to go for the Doctor, or wait by Buffy's side. Her maternal instinct won out, & she stayed put. "Sweetheart, come back to me. Come back. Wake up." She cooed through her tears.

Buffy finally opened her leaden feeling eyes, the bright sunlight, streaming through the window assaulted them. Struggling to sit up she realized she was as weak as a kitten. "Mom... Giles?" she whispered, close to tears again.

The pain in Buffy's eyes nearly tore Joyce heart in two. She had seen this coming, dreaded it in fact. Plotted to stop it from happening. She'd witnessed all the signs, of her daughter falling in love with a man who was old enough to be her father. And now she'd give anything to take that look, out of her eyes. She'd move Heaven & Earth just to get back the man Buffy loved.

Knowing that Buffy needed to know the truth. "He's alive, but barely. They've stabilized him, but he's in a coma." Joyce's voice was hoarse from crying. "He's in intensive care, he lost a lot of blood. But we are hoping for a miracle."

"Please, let me see him."

"I'll go ask the Doctor." Joyce kissed her on the cheek then left to get the doctor. Buffy pushed her tired body up into a sitting position. Glancing down at her hand, she noticed the ring on her finger. Touching it with something akin to awe, Buffy knew what needed to be done.

It had taken nearly an hour for the Doctor to decide that he could unhook her from the millions of machines that were monitoring her. And almost as long to convince him to let her see Giles.

They pushed her into the Intensive Care Unit in a wheelchair. The sight of Giles beaten body, almost shut down Buffy's mind again. But fighting off the fog, she concentrated on what she had to do. It was something that he'd said to her during their meeting in the other reality. He'd said she was his shining light. Well she'd use that to guide him back to her.

She picked up his hand in hers, tears running quietly down her face.

"You don't have long, you need to rest." The Doctor said before quietly leaving the room.

As soon as he was gone. Buffy pulled herself out of the chair and onto his bed. Careful not to knock any of the tubes that, were keeping his body nourished & alive. Easing back so she was resting beside him she held his hand in her lap. She looked at him silently. When the car had hit him, it had broken both his legs, and a couple of ribs, which had punctured his lung, and then there was the blood loss. But the problem was his head. He'd taken a blow to the head, which had caused swelling, which was why he was still in a coma.

Entwining their fingers, she raised his hand to her mouth. Kissing his hand where his ring had resided. Her tears sliding down her face, fell gently onto their joined hands. "I love you Giles. Come back to me." She whispered, then she leaned down to kiss him on his still mouth. As their lips touched a bright light shot from their hands, filling the room with a kaleidoscope of brilliant colors. She opened her eyes to look down into his green eyes.

"Welcome back." She whispered. Then leaned down to kiss him again.
