Buffy let herself into Giles' condo, she was about to call out when she heard voices. Loud voices, from upstairs. Was that Ethan? She quietly made her way upstairs, so that she could hear better and could help Giles if he needed it.
"Dammit Ethan!" Giles said angrily. "I don't need you telling me my job. My former job."
"You listen to me Rupert, I came here to help." Ethan returned. "I may enjoy making your life hell, but that doesn't mean that I want you dead. Or your Slayer for that matter."
Giles snorted. "What exactly do you think you can do?" Giles asked. "I don't know." Ethan admitted. "I'm really not much of a fighter. But, I know you. Have you even told her about the prophecy?"
Outside the door, Buffy's eyes widened. Not again.
"No." Giles answered. "And I don't intend to. I'll go in her place."
"What?!" Ethan exclaimed.
"You heard me." Giles said quietly.
Buffy closed her eyes as if in pain.
"Are you out of your mind?" Ethan asked. "Rupert, ..." He shook his head. "You *are* in love with her. I didn't believe it, but it's true isn't it?" Giles didn't answer. "Does she know?" Ethan asked next.
"I doubt it." Giles said. "Ethan, she's eighteen years old. I won't burden her with this. And I will not send her to meet some damn prophecy. To die. Once was more than enough."
Ethan looked confused. "What are you talking about?"
"Shortly after Buffy came here, there was a prophecy." Giles explained. "The Master. She would die."
"So, she obviously beat the prophecy. That's a good thing Rupert." Ethan commented. "She ..."
"She didn't beat it Ethan." Giles told him. "She died. If Xander hadn't gone after her and been able to resuscitate her ..." He shook his head to clear it of those painful memories. "She was sixteen."
"Rupert, she's the Slayer." Ethan pointed out gently.
"Not to me." Giles responded fiercely. "I hardly knew her then and I couldn't send her. Now, ... "
"She has to know." Ethan stated. "It would be more dangerous for her not to know." He gave Giles a sympathetic look. "I understand how you feel ..." The words trailed off at Giles' glare. "All right, I don't." He paused. "Why haven't you ever told her how you feel?"
"Tell her what?" Giles asked. "That her forty-five year old, former Watcher, wants nothing more out of life than to keep her safe. That every time I see her hurt, a part of me hurts. That whenever she's brooding over Angel, that I want nothing more than to take her in my arms and make her forget him. She's young and she's beautiful, men follow her around like puppies. What? Do really think that she's going to return my feelings? I would lose her."
"You don't know that." Ethan pointed out. "So, she's young. She's not stupid. You're a good man, Rupert. Do you think that she doesn't know that? Do you think that she doesn't know that she won't live very long? She may not talk about it, but you can bet that she thinks about it. A girl could do a whole hell of a lot worse than to love and be loved by a man such as you."
"You're ruining your image Ethan." Giles said quietly.
"Yes, well, who would believe you if you told them that your old mate Ethan Rayne was a romantic at heart?" He looked at Giles somberly. "If you go, you'll probably die."
Giles shrugged philosophically. "What would you have me do Ethan? I love her."
"At least tell her how you feel." Ethan said. "Even if you don't tell her about the prophecy. She deserves that much."
Ethan went back to his hotel room feeling tired. Caring took a lot out of you. That's why he tried not to any more. Before he could close the door behind him, a very determined Slayer pushed her way in.
Buffy looked at Ethan, steadily. "Tell me about the prophecy."
Ethan settled them at the table by the window, before he began. "It's rather simple really. The Slayer shall face someone from her past, that shall rise again and destroy her." Ethan sighed. "I came across a reference to it in the Black Chronicles. It's from the Codex."
"I really hate that book." Buffy stated with feeling.
"I can't say as I blame you." Ethan commented. "Are you going to let him face this?"
"No." Buffy said softly.
"I didn't think so." Ethan said. "What are you going to do?"
"I can't believe I'm asking you for a favor, but I am." Buffy said.
Ethan looked at her warily. "What are you going to do?" He asked again. "Seduce him."
Buffy knocked on the condo's door. Giles opened it less than a minute later. "Buffy, what are you doing here?" He was surprised to see her.
"Just wanted to talk." Buffy said with a shrug.
Giles moved out of the way and gestured for her to enter. "Is anything wrong?" He asked as they sat on the couch.
Buffy shook her head. "No. Like I said, just wanted to talk."
"About what?" Giles asked.
"There's this guy." Buffy said.
Giles tensed as if he'd taken a hit. "Go on." He encouraged.
"He's great." Buffy said as she watched him closely. "Wonderful. Kind, smart, funny, sweet. Strong, so strong. Not just physically, but inside. I know he loves me."
"You haven't mentioned him before, have you?" Giles asked. He felt his heart break.
"Not to you." Buffy told him. "There's a couple of problems. I know we can work them out though."
Giles looked at her oddly. "He's not a vampire?"
"Like I'd do that again." Buffy said. "Learned that one the hard way."
"Then, what are the problems?" Giles asked neutrally.
"Well," Buffy sighed. "He's older. Quite a bit older. And he's keeping something from me." Buffy finished softly.
Giles sat back. "You've spoken with Ethan, haven't you?" He asked flatly. "I told him ..."
"I heard you." Buffy interrupted. "I came by earlier. You were shouting. Giles, why?"
"Why what?" Giles asked in return. "Why didn't I tell you about the prophecy? Why didn't I tell you ...?"
"...How you felt?" Buffy finished. "Giles?"
Giles didn't say anything for a long time. "What should I say Buffy? That I love you? You knew that."
"I knew you cared." Buffy said. "I didn't know that you ... I love you too, Giles."
Giles pushed off the couch and began to pace. "What is this about Buffy? If you expect me to believe that you are suddenly in love with me as well ..." He looked at her closely. "Did Ethan do something?"
Buffy rolled her eyes. "It's not suddenly Giles. And no, Ethan didn't do any love spells ... I don't think. Why do you think I always come to you? Why does your opinion mean so much more than anyone else's? Okay, so I needed to grow up before I could see it clearly. But, I know that you are the most important person in my life."
Giles didn't quite believe her. He watched her stand and walk over to him. He put a hand to her cheek. "I wish I could believe you." He said softly. Buffy looked up at him, hurt. "Why can't you?"
"Because I know you, Luv." Giles said with a gentle smile. "You've a soft heart. Maybe you even want to believe it, so you wouldn't hurt me."
"God, Giles! Do you really think I would do that to you?" Buffy exclaimed. "To *you*?"
"I don't know Buffy." Giles said.
Buffy moved closer. So close that their bodies touched. She moved her hands to his chest and slid them up behind his neck. Then, she stood on tiptoe and placed her lips to his. She kissed him softly, gently, again and again.
Giles' hands moved to rest at the small of her back and he gently, without even realizing he did it, pulled her tighter against him. He hesitantly returned her kisses. He felt her fingers twine in the hair at his nape. He applied just a touch of pressure and she opened her mouth for his exploring tongue.
Buffy met his tongue with her own in a sensual duel. She moved her hands to his shoulders and, with his cooperation, pushed his jacket off. She undid his tie and threw it. When she moved to the buttons of his shirt, he stop her hands with his own.
Giles pulled back, just a hair. "Are you certain Buffy?"
Buffy looked up at him, her eyes filled with passion. She never said a word, just pulled her hands free and with a quick yank, his shirt buttons went flying and her hands moved to his chest.
Giles took the hint. He threw his shirt and it landed by his tie. he wrapped his arms around her and kissed her again. He grasped the hem of her shirt and pulled it over her head and quickly returned his mouth to hers. His left hand moved and quickly unhooked her bra and pulled it off of her. His hands covered her breasts reverently.
Buffy slid her hands down, one rested at his pants button, the other caressed him through his pants, beneath his zipper. Her fingers shook so badly that she ended up popping the button.
Giles chuckled softly. "You're quite hard on the wardrobe." Then, he groaned when she lowered the zipper. He felt her encircle him with her small hand, "Oh, God." He said harshly. He moved in her hand even as his own hand moved to her waistband. He undid her slacks and pushed them down. Together, they kicked off their remaining clothes, including shoes and socks.
Buffy started to move backwards towards the stairs and pulled him along with her. She moved up one step and enjoyed being at almost eye level with him. As he kissed his way down her neck, he encouraged her to move up another step. This put her breasts on level with his mouth and he took shameful advantage of that.
Giles slid his hands down her back as he devoured her breasts, slid them down the back of her thighs and helped her wrap her legs around his waist, nearly at his chest. He continued his assault on her as he carried her upstairs.
He managed to get them on the bed without mishap. Buffy maneuvered them until she was on top. She kissed his chest. "Do you believe me now?" She kissed his stomach, then lower. "Do you?" She took his tip into her mouth.
"God yes." Giles cried out.
"Good." Buffy said in satisfaction as she kissed her way back up.
Giles reversed their positions. "So, you want to play, do you?" He growled. He kissed his way down and spent considerable time at her breasts before moving on. His tongue dipped into her navel and she squirmed and emitted an odd little sound. He smiled against her thigh.
"Giles please?" Buffy wasn't sure exactly what she was asking, but Giles seemed to know. "Giles!" She screamed as he pressed his tongue to her clit. "Please, now?"
Giles kissed his way back up. "Are you certain you don't want me to ...?" His words trailed off as he saw the look in her eyes.
"I want you with me." Buffy gasped out quietly. She pulled him up to where he laid completely on her. "Please?"
Giles kissed her gently, but thoroughly as he positioned himself. She wrapped her legs around him as he pushed in to her and they moaned in unison. She met him thrust for thrust as the rhythm steadily increased in speed. Giles slid his hands under her hips and angled her higher. "Giles!" She screamed again as she came. "I love you Buffy." Giles groaned as he followed her over the edge.
Giles watched, from the bedroom doorway, as Buffy lay in exhausted sleep. Now more than ever he couldn't let her go. He loved her so much. He moved to the bed, leaned down and kissed her gently. "I love you, Buffy." Buffy sighed in her sleep. "Love you Giles."
Giles moved to the other side of the door. "Please forgive me." Buffy woke to the sound of Giles' voice. She looked at him sleepily, positive that he wasn't speaking English.
"What are you doing?" Then her eyes got wide. "Giles, no." She whispered.
Giles finished the incantation. He watched Buffy as she ran naked to the door, only to hit the invisible barrier. "I can't let you go." He said softly. Buffy looked at him as tears ran down her cheeks. "Then stay with me." She said in a small voice. "If you won't let me go with you, then stay with me."
"You know that I can't." Giles said.
"Then we'll face it together." Buffy tried. "Damn it Giles, don't do this to me!"
"I'm doing this *for* you." Giles told her.
"Do you know what it would do to me, if you didn't come back?" Buffy asked. "It would kill me." She told him.
"And if anything happened to you, it would kill me." Giles told her.
"You have no right to do this." Buffy said sadly. "Giles." She was getting to him, she could tell.
"I need to know that you're safe." Giles said quietly.
"Giles, I'll never be safe." Buffy pointed out. "I'm the Slayer. Let me do what you trained me to do."
"And if you die?" Giles asked in a whisper.
"Then I go out fighting." Buffy said simply. "We're stronger together than apart."
"She's right." Ethan said as he walked up behind Giles. He eyed Buffy appreciatively. "Well, well, well Ripper."
"Ethan!" Giles said harshly, as Buffy wrapped a blanket around herself. Ethan looked at Giles amused. "What are you doing here?" Giles asked him.
"I had this feeling that one of you would be stuck." Ethan said. "I wasn't certain which one it would be, so here I am to the rescue."
"You knew he'd do this to me?" Buffy asked.
"If you didn't have him tied to a chair first." Ethan answered.
Buffy looked down guiltily. "Buffy." Giles exclaimed. Buffy's eyes shot to his. "Don't even go there Mr. Magic." Giles had the grace to flush. "Can you get me out of here Ethan?" She asked.
Ethan looked at Giles, Giles looked at Buffy. "I'll do it."
Buffy was released and she quickly dressed. She met Giles and Ethan downstairs. "Now what?"
The trio quietly walked through the cemetery. Then they heard it, a voice Buffy had hoped to never hear again. "Hello Lover."
Buffy and Giles turned as one and Angel/us found himself with two crossbow bolts in his chest, just before he turned to dust.
Ethan stood with his mouth open. "That was the bloody prophecy?" He exclaimed.
"I guess you really are over Angel." Giles commented.
"Do I need to show you again, just how over Angel I am?" Buffy asked in mock exasperation.
Giles grinned down at her. "Please do Luv."
